Writing is strange business. Sometimes your fingers refuse to make concrete the idea in your head; a seemingly brilliant thought comes out bland in words. Other times your fingers type out something that surprises you with how perfectly right it is. That was my experience with the line quoted below. It’s from a scene late in the novel, and when I wrote it, I had to stop and think, “Where did that come from?” It was exactly what I wanted to convey in that moment, but without knowing, until I typed it out, how I would express it.
